Course Description
Virtual production is changing the entertainment industry by making it possible to create immersive, realistic sets for projects like The Mandalorian, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Barbie, and more. In this course, you’ll dive into virtual production and explore a collection of modern filmmaking techniques that combine classic cinematography with tools from real-time computer graphics, animation, special effects, and other digital visual storytelling methods. Throughout the week, you’ll discover how the shows and movies you love use these virtual production tools to create rich visual landscapes that would have been difficult or impossible to execute using more traditional techniques.

If you’re a rising high school sophomore, junior, or senior interested in filmmaking and virtual production, this course is a great way for you to learn more about how virtual production works and what a future in this field could look like. By the end of the week, you’ll have an understanding of how virtual production works and hands-on experience working with this groundbreaking technology.
What You’ll Learn
During this week-long immersion, you’ll learn about the tools and techniques of virtual production and gain a basic understanding of how they’re used in filmmaking. You’ll cover topics including motion capture, LED wall display, real-time graphics, cinematography, and more. Throughout the week you’ll gain the skills and knowledge you need to create a short interactive, dynamic work with your classmates using the virtual production tools at the MAGIC Center.
How You’ll Learn
This course will focus on giving you not just knowledge and information about virtual production, but actual hands-on experience working with industry-standard virtual production equipment. RIT’s MAGIC Center has a virtual production sound stage with a full size LED volume that you will get to work on during this course. The week will culminate in a team project where you’ll work with your classmates to create a short work utilizing the virtual production techniques you learned throughout the course.
