Course Description

Have you ever wondered what makes your phone work or wanted to take it apart and look inside to see what it looks like? In this course, you’ll learn how semiconductor technology is used in smartphones and computers and how it allows social media apps like Tik Tok, Snapchat and BeReal to function. You’ll even develop your own system that will function like a simple social media app by the end of the week and gain the skills and foundational knowledge you need to build more apps in the future.

If you’re a rising high school sophomore, junior, or senior interested in engineering, how semiconductors like microchips work, or what makes your phone run the way it does, this course is a great way to dive into the field of semiconductors. Semiconductors are used in a lot of the technology we use every day, and you’ll get a chance to discover how they’re used and what you can do with semiconductor technology.

What You’ll Learn

Each day of this five day course will focus on a different component of semiconductor technology, from how common semiconductor devices work to how they work with other technology to create the systems we use every day. By the end of the week, you’ll be able to develop a system that functions like a simple social media app and understand how you can continue to use what you learned in the future.

How You’ll Learn

This hands-on intensive includes a lot of time spent in the lab exploring how different semiconductor devices work as well as time spent developing your own simple app. You’ll get the chance to see how devices such as Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs), photodiodes, and transistors work, then investigate the more complicated systems that are made using many of these semiconductor devices. This includes OLED displays, cameras, wireless communication systems, and more. You won’t just be learning about the theory behind semiconductors in this course — you’ll get to dive into how they actually work and how you can build a future working with semiconductor devices.
