Course Description

Have you dabbled with 3D printing or are you simply intrigued to learn more about it? Take your skills to the next level by immersing yourself in the world of 3D printing this summer. In this course, you’ll get the chance to not only learn about 3D printing and tour RIT’s state of the art facilities, you’ll also get to design, 3D print, and drop test your own protective cradle for a “unicorn egg.”

Is This Course For You?

If you’re a rising high school sophomore, junior, or senior interested in engineering, design, or 3D printing, this course will give you the opportunity to see the state of the art technology being used at RIT as well as the opportunity to use some of it yourself. You’ll learn about what makes a strong 3D design as well as what choices there are for different careers in this exciting field.

What You’ll Learn

In this five day intensive course, you’ll get the chance to learn about different ways that 3D printing is being used and get to design and 3D print your own item made to withstand a drop test and protect a unicorn egg. Throughout the week, you’ll get the chance to witness first hand how state of the art 3D printing equipment is being used to tackle real world challenges in engineering. This includes touring and learning about two working RIT additive manufacturing labs where active research is currently being conducted by RIT students, industry professionals, and academic experts in the field. By the end of the week you’ll have an idea of the diverse engineering and design opportunities available if you want to work and study in this field.

How You’ll Learn

This course was designed to maximize your hands-on experience with 3D printing and design. You’ll tour RIT’s state of the art facilities, learn how to design something to be 3D printed, and get the chance to actually design, 3D print, and test how well your creation protects your unicorn egg. On the final day of the course, everyone’s 3D printed creations will be drop tested using a giant weight that will crash down on the protective cradle you’ve created to see if the unicorn egg will survive.

Skills You Walk Away With

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Participate in lattice structure design, 3D printing, mechanical characterization, and engineering analysis and optimization.
  • Implement computer-aided design to create lattice structures that will be produced using 3D printers.
  • Analyze and optimize the lattice structures based on results of a modified drop test.
  • Synthesize learnings to provide solutions for absorbing and dissipating impact energies.
