Course Description

If you’re interested in working in the land surveying industry, there are two main pathways you can take: mainly office work or mainly field work. If you’re interested in working in the field, which includes tasks like collecting and compiling field data, this course will help you gain the skills and practical experience you need to hit the ground running as a land survey field technician.

Is This Course For You?

This course is designed for anyone interested in joining the field of land surveying but hasn’t had specific formal education or training on it. The only requisite for this course is a high school diploma or equivalent, though it is recommended that you take the first two courses in the Land Survey Technician Mastery Certificate program, Surveying Fundamentals and Mathematics for Surveying, before taking this course. This elective course is one of two options if you’re pursuing the Land Survey Technician Mastery Certificate, and it is better suited for you if you’re interested in field work as opposed to office work as a land surveyor.

What You’ll Learn

In this course, you’ll learn more about what goes into being a land survey technician that focuses on field work. You’ll learn more about what goes into collecting field data and compiling it and get hands-on experience with it. You’ll also practice collecting and analyzing data from surveying instruments and equipment and conclude with a sample data set ready for design.

How You’ll Learn

This ten week course takes place in person so you can get the hands-on experience you need for a future working as a land survey field technician. You’ll get practice with tasks you’ll have to complete in the field, including collecting field data, compiling field data, and problem solving issues in data sets. For your portfolio piece, you’ll be given a data set with embedded issues that you’ll have to fix and present for a handoff to an office land survey technician.

Skills You Walk Away With

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain proper procedures for the collection and sharing of field data.
  • Demonstrate accurate data collecting techniques using common field survey equipment.
  • Translate data collected in the field to be ready for CAD input.
