Course Description

Data collection and analysis is a primary component of surveying. The ability to take detailed, high-quality notes, accurately collect data, and properly analyze that data is key to working as a land survey technician. In this course, you’ll cover all of those skills and more to prepare you for the computational and analytic concepts that you’ll use in your future work as a land surveyor.

Is This Course For You?

This course is designed for anyone interested in joining the field of land surveying but hasn’t had specific formal education or training on it. The only requisite for this course is a high school diploma or equivalent, though it is recommended that you take the first two courses in the Land Survey Technician Mastery Certificate program, Surveying Fundamentals and Mathematics for Surveying, before taking this course.

What You’ll Learn

In this course, you’ll learn about data collection methods for measuring, leveling, curves, traversing, and topography as well as how to compute and analyze that data. You’ll also learn about how to properly document and write field notes and be introduced to the foundational concepts of GIS. Throughout the course you’ll engage in problem-solving scenarios based on real-world examples, and you’ll finish the course by completing a data analysis project that can be added to your portfolio of work samples.

How You’ll Learn

This twelve week course is fully online with synchronous sessions where you will virtually meet with your class to cover course materials, case studies, and practice solving problems that may come up in the field as a land surveyor. You’ll work towards a final data analysis project for the course, which you can add to your portfolio to demonstrate your mastery of the skills you’ll learn in this course.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain best practices for fundamental survey skills (measuring, leveling, traversing, documenting, scanning, using GIS, etc.) and for computing and analyzing land survey data.
  • Identify the factors in surveying measuring, such as cardinal directions, types of errors, precision, and accuracy.
  • Review function and operation of data collection instruments, such as total stations, GPS receivers, last scanners, drones, automatic levels, data collectors, and measuring tape.
  • Demonstrate how to properly measure, calculate, and analyze data in the following topic areas:
    • Taping and EDM distance corrections
    • Vertical Distance Measurement 
    • Differential Leveling
    • Trigonometric Leveling
    • Angle and Direction Measurement 
    • Angles, Bearings and Azimuths
    • Magnetic Declination
    • Angular and linear closures, precisions, adjustments
    • Highway Curves: Horizontal and Vertical
  • Apply the following computational processes: 
    • Control Traversing and Computations
    • Coordinate Computation
    • Coordinate Geometry (COGO): Inverse and Forward computations
    • Area Computations
    • Grades/Slope Computations
    • Volume Computation
  • Be experienced in taking high-quality field notes.
  • Apply concepts of data collection and analysis to real-life example scenarios.
