Course Description

The fundamental skills that you need to know to become a land surveyor will help you not only do your job effectively, they will also keep you safe while you’re working on the site. In this course, you’ll build a foundation of skills and knowledge that you need in order to start working as a land surveyor, including the basic principles of land surveying, how to use survey equipment, and important safety measures.

Is This Course For You?

This course is designed for anyone interested in joining the field of land surveying but hasn’t had specific formal education or training on it. The only requisite for this course is a high school diploma or equivalent, so whether you’re just starting your career or are looking to change fields, this course will be a good fit for you. This is the first course in the Land Survey Technician Mastery Certificate, and it’s recommended that you take this course before any of the others in the program.

What You’ll Learn

This course covers the fundamental concepts related to the field of land survey. You’ll cover topics including a brief overview of the history of the profession, the evolution of surveying equipment, basic surveying principles, and important lessons in safety and first aid. You’ll also learn some basics of mapping and begin to understand the role surveying plays in building and construction. Every topic you cover will help you understand what a land surveyor does as well as give you an overview of what to expect on the job.

How You’ll Learn

This twelve week course is fully online and asynchronous, which means you can do the work at the most convenient time for your schedule throughout the week. Activities in the class include mapping exercises, quizzes and knowledge checks, and more. By the end of the course, you’ll create a final project that includes both multiple choice and open-ended responses to a set of problem-based questions and scenarios (i.e. what would you do if…?) related to safety, instruments and equipment uses, basic mapping.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the impact of surveying engineering in a global, societal, and environmental context.
  • Explain the core concepts of surveying, including the history of the profession and general guiding principles.
  • Identify and define the use of the various surveying instruments such as total stations, GPS receivers, terrestrial laser scanners, sUAS (drones), automatic levels, and data collectors.
  • Understand the different kinds of maps and demonstrate basic mapping skills including map/plan reading, scale conversions, contour interpolation, reading deeds, and identifying metes and bounds.
  • Explain core concepts of safety precautions and their purpose including site safety, basic first aid, environmental hazards (poison ivy, ticks, dogs, etc.) and relevant OSHA-10 competencies.
