Course Description

Do you have great ideas for websites but don’t know how to bring them to life? During this course, you’ll learn how to build a high-quality website from scratch. You’ll cover the basics of coding a site as well as foundational elements of graphic design and interactivity to build sites that go well beyond the basics. By the end of the week, you’ll have a completed website that you can access from home and the knowledge you need to develop countless more sites in the future.

Is This Course For You?

If you’re a rising high school sophomore, junior, or senior that has always been interested in designing and developing your own website, this course is for you. You’ll cover everything from the tools and basics you need to know for web development to how to create aesthetically pleasing designs. This course is centered around hands-on learning, so you’ll develop your own site during your time on the RIT campus.

What You’ll Learn

A lot goes into designing, developing, and launching a successful website, and you’ll get an idea of everything you need to know during this course. You’ll start out learning the basics of the tools you need to know including text editors, servers, and more, but you’ll also move onto more advanced styling tools such as CSS display and animations. Graphic design is also key when it comes to developing websites, and you’ll cover the basics of graphic design as well as interaction design. Using the graphic design skills you’ll acquire, you’ll also design an image that will be laser cut into the top of a plywood box to show how these skills are useful for applications outside of web development. You’ll also get the chance to work with industry standard software like Figma and Adobe Photoshop throughout the course.

By the end of this course, you’ll know what goes into the web development process from starting with an idea to a live website. You’ll be building and strengthening the tools, skills, and processes that are used every day by web development professionals as you work on developing your own site.

How You’ll Learn

During this five day course, you’ll be working out of one of RIT’s computer labs while you learn how to build your own professional looking websites and applications. You’ll get a hands-on learning experience and walk away from the course with a functional website that you’ll be able to access from home so you can show your friends and family.

Each day of the course will address a different aspect of web development, and by the end of the week you’ll know how to create an interactive, aesthetically pleasing website from scratch. You’ll also design your own image using the design principles you’ll cover and use a laser cutter to etch those images and cut out a dovetail box from 1/8" plywood, which you can take home with you at the end of the course.

Skills You Walk Away With

By the end of this course, you’ll know:

  • How to build your own websites and apps from scratch.
  • The basics of graphic and interaction design.
  • A little bit about SDLC, number theory, color theory, and software patterns.
  • Foundational skills and principles of design.

You will also finish the week with a functioning website as well as a wood box with an image of your own creation laser cut into the top.
