Course Description

Public speaking is an invaluable skill that you can use in any field, industry, or profession. While it seems like some people are just born with the ability to give great speeches or speak eloquently when under pressure, it’s more likely that they just had a lot of practice. During this five day immersive course, you’ll learn how to craft and give great speeches that will be able to influence your audience and strengthen your argument.

Is This Course For You?

If you’re a rising high school sophomore, junior, or senior that wants to improve your public speaking skills, this course will help you regardless of what your academic or career interests are. You’ll work on your creativity and self-expression while learning how to become a better public speaker whether you’re comfortable speaking in front of a crowd or if you have terrible stage fright.

What You’ll Learn

During this course, you’ll learn how to craft and deliver meaningful speeches that can inform, motivate, and inspire your audience. When it comes to crafting a speech, you’ll cover everything from the best research methods to help you gather helpful supporting materials for your argument to how to narrow down your focus depending on where you’re speaking. You’ll learn how to edit your speeches depending on the audience, purpose, occasion, and goals so that you can effectively get your message across in the best way possible.

You’ll also learn helpful tips and techniques for delivering the speeches you write with your newly acquired skills. Non-verbal communication is also vital to giving an effective speech, and we’ll cover some of the ways you can use body language, tone, and intonation to reinforce the message of your speech. And if you have stage fright, there’s no need to worry – this course will give you tools and techniques that you can use to control and even move past your communication anxiety so that you can feel comfortable speaking in front of others.

How You’ll Learn

During this five day course, you’ll learn how to be an effective public speaker from expert speakers and speechwriters in a variety of fields and industries including public policy, philanthropy, science and technology, and communication. The tips and techniques you’ll learn from these guest speakers and your instructors will help you as you write your own speech for the competition at the end of the week.

You’ll learn in a supportive environment that will challenge you to use critical thinking skills while still using your creativity while writing and presenting. Throughout the week, there will be a range of activities that encourage teamwork, creativity, and self-expression including interactive role play, debates, and storytelling exercises. These activities will also help you feel more comfortable giving and receiving feedback on your public speaking skills, and if you struggle with stage fright they’ll help you feel more comfortable presenting in front of the group.
