Course Description

Learning the basics of behavioral health means developing a working knowledge of patient-centered care. This includes exploring a patient's physical and mental symptoms, and applying strategies that will help identify next steps in treatment. Once you complete this course, you’ll be able to develop important frameworks for patient care, as well as conduct impactful needs analyses on patients exhibiting symptoms through relationship-oriented communication. This is the first course in our Behavioral Health Mastery Certificate, and it should be taken first if you’re pursuing that pathway.

Is This Course For You?

This course is designed for practicing clinical health professionals in non-behavioral health roles whether you’re in a role that requires no prior behavioral health training such as nurses, physician’s assistants, nurse practitioners, and medical technicians, or a role that requires some behavioral health training such as medical doctors, peer advocates, and helpline/crisis workers. Whether you’re new to the field or have been practicing for years, this course can help you assess the best way to communicate with your patients so you fully understand their symptoms and overall become a more well rounded clinician.

What You’ll Learn

Through practical training including relevant readings, video lectures, case studies, and hypothetical patient assessments, you’ll learn about mental health in medical settings. By the end of this course, you’ll have tools and techniques to help you assess your patients’ mental health before, during, and after they’re in your office or hospital. This includes learning about the right questions to ask your patients as well as how to spot answers that can be indicative of potential mental health issues, you can potentially prevent the issues from escalating into a crisis that can prevent you from providing effective care.
