Course Description

Data visualization is an important element of data science, and the field of geographic and spatial data science is no exception. In this course, you’ll learn how to create geographic visualizations as well as how to evaluate the effectiveness of the visualizations yourself and others have created.

Is This Course for You?

This course is designed for data science professionals currently working in geospatial analysis, data analysis, data science, or other types of computerized data looking to advance their skills. This is the third core course for the Spatial Data Science Applications Mastery Certificate and is part of both the GIS-A and GIS-D tracks. If you’re pursuing the mastery certificate we strongly recommend you take this course after the first two core courses, Core Skills in Geospatial Technology and Spatial Python Programming and Operation of Commercial and Open Python Spatial Data Science Libraries, and before the elective of your choosing.

What You’ll Learn

In this course, you’ll examine the concepts and techniques associated with the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces. Utilizing Tableau visualization software and Python computer programming exercises, you’ll create interactive visual interfaces such as dashboards with a particular emphasis on geographic visualization for presentation and dissemination of spatial analytic process results. By the end of this course, you’ll have created a Tableau workbook and associated datasets in GitHub with an integrated geographic map and other data graphics combined into a working dashboard. You’ll also create a Jupyter notebook with source code files written in GitHub demonstrating your ability to write or modify existing or AI-generated code in ArcGIS API for Python and/or GeoPandas code for geographic visualization, a dissemination plan of spatial analytic results, and map creation via Python using choropleth mapping concepts, projections, figure/ground relationships, cartographic design principles, proper color use, and effective use of text and labels. These projects can be added to your professional portfolio to demonstrate your abilities with the skills you’ll gain throughout the course.

How You’ll Learn

This 12-week course is fully online with synchronous sessions each week. You can view the times of these sessions by clicking the “+” icon next to the available course dates. Geographic Visualization with Python is an experientially focused course, and throughout the course you will gain hands-on experience with the concepts you’re learning about through coding exercises, visualization exercises in Tableau, and more. You’ll get feedback from your instructor throughout the course that will help you ensure that your work is meeting the objectives of each project and exercise.

Skills You Walk Away With

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply geographic visualization concepts to spatial data science applications.
  • Design and construct geographic visualizations using Python.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of geographic visualizations using Python for the presentation and dissemination of the spatial analytic process.

Prerequisites

Participants in this course will need to purchase a student subscription to ArcGIS Pro for $100/year. Additionally, participants will need to purchase extra credits during the course at $120/1,000 credits.
