CE-CIRC-4000 - Beyond Soldering
Course Description
Soldering is a key part of the surface mount technology (SMT) manufacturing process, but there are additional processes in the electronics manufacturing industry that are important to understand as you grow your career in this booming industry. In this course, you’ll gain skills and knowledge that will help you understand various aspects of electronics manufacturing including AOI and SPI inspection, how to create downstream process evaluations, and more.
Is This Course For You?
Beyond Soldering is a good fit for your needs if you’re interested in diving into the processes used in electronics manufacturing that go beyond SMT. This course is designed for those already working in electronics manufacturing, though the skills you’ll gain in this course can be applicable to those with various professional backgrounds within the industry. If you’re pursuing the Circuit Board Assembly, Quality, and Reliability Mastery Certificate, this course is one of the elective options you can choose from. If you’re pursuing the mastery certificate, we recommend that you start with the three core courses, but this course can also be taken as a standalone if you’re interested in gaining the specific skills and knowledge covered.
What You’ll Learn
In this course, you’ll dive deeper into the additional processes implemented in electronics manufacturing that extend beyond SMT. You’ll cover topics including an in-depth review of dispensing, AOI & SPI inspection, and electrical testing basics. Throughout the course, you’ll also have the opportunity to compare various dispensing methodologies and applications, such as underfilling vs. conformal coating. The course will culminate in the creation of a downstream process evaluation with a cell phone product as an example where you’ll identify process requirements and limitations of various downstream processes following surface mount soldering.
How You’ll Learn
This six week hybrid course consists of both asynchronous online content and in-person labs. Asynchronous content will cover the topics mentioned above, and in-person sessions will focus on the examination of devices and materials. By the end of the course, you’ll have the knowledge and skills you need to create a downstream process evaluation.
Skills You Walk Away With
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate electrical testing methods, including functional and in-circuit testing.
- Identify and describe dispensing applications and challenges.
- Identify and describe AOI and SPI inspection limitations.
