Course Description

In this course, students will study how social, economic, governmental, and environmental factors shape the health of populations. Drawing inspiration from health systems around the world, students will develop strategies for driving innovation in US health systems that leads to improved population health outcomes and greater efficiency in the delivery of care. The course explores how the complex network of public and private health services organizations interact, and how leaders can effectively communicate a plan for change to diverse stakeholders. Students will develop strategies for evaluating the effectiveness of their plan based on data pertaining to health system operations and patient outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Analyze how social and economic factors contribute to population health outcomes.
  • Develop a strategy for decreasing disparities in population health that arise from socioeconomic factors, and communicate the strategy by addressing the needs of diverse stakeholders.
  • Assess metrics that describe the effectiveness of your strategy, and develop a plan for modifying the strategy in response to changes in these metrics over time.

Prerequisites

This is a credit-bearing, graduate-level, non-matriculated course. While all are welcome to enroll, this course was designed for working clinical and non-clinical health care professionals who desire to advance their careers and expand their expertise from individual patients to a population focus. This course will also be valuable for professionals working outside of health care who desire to apply their knowledge and experience to advance health care delivery.
