Course Description
This course is designed as an introduction to the field of project management and suitable for those wishing to employ project management concepts immediately to their work; It is also foundational for those wishing to study project management elements in more detail through future courses or to pursue certifications available at many levels of depth. The primary objective Is to provide an overview of the field of project management as reflected in the learning objectives listed below. Specifically, this course will address the following:
- Define and explain the role and importance of the project manager
- Compare different types of project management methodologies
- Identify and explain the five process groups and ten knowledge integration areas of project management
- Define and explain project scope, schedules and estimations, and work breakdown structures
- Identify and assess project stakeholders and determine possible impacts on project success
- Understand how to plan, manage and monitor Project Communications including the management of virtual teams
- Identify, analyze, respond, and control project risks, including the creation of a Risk Watch List
- Understand theories and applications of leadership and motivation, including interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, and team building
- Explain basic principles associated with cost management and estimations, Earned Value Analysis, Life Cycle Costs, purchasing and procurement
- Understand basic concepts of Lean Six Sigma and quality control tools
- Create a project plan, including identification of resources, stakeholders, timelines, task identification, critical paths, cost estimates, milestones, success measures, and contingency plans
- Create visual plan representations in Gantt charts and other methods to communicate and monitor plan progress
- Identify approaches for monitoring project progress, resources, and team performance
- Build the after-action review of the process and identify lessons learned
