Course Description

A lot of thought and consideration goes into developing the designs for the packaging of the products you see around you. In this course, you’ll dive into the skills and knowledge you need to develop a printed package system for a small consumer product from the beginning to the end of the product. By the end of this course, you’ll understand how designers create packaging that is eye catching, useful, and engaging.

Is This Course For You?

If you’re a rising high school sophomore, junior, or senior interested in graphic design and what goes into designing product packaging, this course is a great way for you to learn more about product packaging design and what a future in this field could look like. By the end of the week, you’ll have an understanding of how designers think about packaging design as well as a mockup you can use for your own portfolio.

What You’ll Learn

In this hands-on course, you’ll learn about the entire process of creating a printed package from the initial design concepts to the creation of a final mockup. You’ll use industry standard design software including SolidWorks for 3D modeling, ArtiosCAD for carton design, and Adobe's Creative Cloud (Illustrator and Photoshop) for graphic elements. Throughout the week, you’ll learn about the considerations professional designers need to consider in their work and get a chance to use that design thinking to influence your own creative choices and approach.

How You’ll Learn

During this five day intensive, you’ll be working towards creating one main final project of a packaging design of your choosing. Through guest lectures from industry experts and site visits to packaging and printing facilities, you’ll get a glimpse of what it would be like to work or study in this field. You’ll also engage in case studies of successful product packaging to understand how the design concepts you’re learning about are used in the real world. By the end of the week, you’ll have a finalized mock up of a product that you will get feedback on and use as a portfolio piece in the future.

Skills You’ll Walk Away With

By the end of this course, you will:

  • Develop proficiency in industry-standard software tools such as SolidWorks, ArtiosCAD, and Adobe’s Creative Cloud. Students will develop 3D product models, 2D structural designs for paper cartons, and the graphic elements of the package respectively.
  • Have practical experience in every stage of packaging development from initial design concepts to the creation of final prototypes.
  • Explore the border context of packaging through industry guest lectures, site visits to packaging facilities, and case studies of successful product packaging.
