Course Description

Coaching esports requires you to not only be able to bring your team together, but also to help them improve their gaming skills. The ability to provide effective feedback that will not only help your team improve but also bolster confidence and camaraderie can be a challenge, but this course will help you develop your coaching strategies and techniques. This course will help you gain the coaching skills you need and allow you to actually practice using them in a simulated tournament environment so you understand how to implement your strategies.

Is This Course For You?

This course was designed for educators, coaches, community leaders, and esports enthusiasts with at least a high school reading and writing level and an interest in esports. You don’t need to be a gamer to take this course, though you will need to have some familiarity with gameplay as well as the basics of esports coaching. It’s recommended that you take this course following the first two core courses in the Esports Coaching Mastery Certificate if you do not have prior experience.

What You’ll Learn

This course explores advanced coaching techniques and strategies specific to esports and builds on the fundamentals of coaching that you learned from previous courses in this program. Throughout the course, you’ll delve into player psychology, building a team, in-game performance analysis, and techniques for providing feedback. You’ll have the opportunity to analyze game play, role-play providing feedback, and create a coaching plan for recruitment, training, player support, and player evaluation. At the culmination of the course, you’ll work collaboratively to create a simulated esports team in a genre of your choice to get a chance to practice your coaching skills, from recruitment to player evaluation.

How You’ll Learn

This twelve week course is fully online with synchronous sessions including lectures, workshops, practice coaching exercises, and more. This hands-on course includes activities such as analyzing real or simulated game play, role-playing providing feedback to your team, creating a coaching plan that covers everything from recruitment to evaluation, and more. The final project for this course is to create an in-class tournament, assign students different roles, go through the full coaching process from start to finish, write an evaluation of the team’s performance, and include a personal reflection on the experience of coaching that team.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Develop strategies for responding to aspects of player psychology and motivation, including concepts of game rage, toxicity, behavior redirection, burnout, and overall player well-being.
  • Analyze esports games at a high level to improve gameplay and strategies.
  • Implement coaching strategies for overall player development and support, including providing meaningful feedback for improved player performance and growth.
  • Develop strategies for creating a team, including recruitment, building team culture, branding, promotion, and establishing a fan base.
  • Understand the competitive market, including ranking and stats, networks and brackets, and entering tournaments.
  • Master advanced coaching strategies for optimizing team performance within different game genres.
