Course Description

Storytelling has the power to transform a dry subject into a compelling tale, making it relatable and memorable. Learning how to find the right stories to weave into a presentation or speech that’s both relevant and helps convey your message can be difficult, but throughout this course you’ll learn how to effectively use narrative storytelling in presentations. By the end of this course, you’ll have the tools, skills, and knowledge you need to craft engaging presentations and speeches that utilize storytelling.

Is This Course For You?

This course is designed for a wide range of professionals in a multitude of fields including business executives, entrepreneurs, educators and trainers, sales and marketing professionals, healthcare professionals, engineers, researchers, government officials, nonprofit leaders, and anyone seeking to enhance their professional impact through outstanding professional communication. You’re ready for this course if you have a high school diploma or equivalent, are fluent in English or ASL, and feel comfortable with writing and delivering presentations and speeches, but want to add storytelling and narrative elements to your skillset. If you need to hone the content of your presentations, we recommend that you take Mastering Presentation and Speech Writing first, and if you need to develop more skills related to delivering your speeches, we recommend taking Delivering Presentations and Speeches with Confidence. This course is designed to be accessible and inclusive to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

What You’ll Learn

In this course, you will gain the tools and confidence to craft and incorporate vivid and engaging narratives into impromptu, manuscript, and extemporaneous speeches and presentations. You’ll learn how to isolate the factors of storytelling so you can use them effectively to convey information and ideas, even if that information is technical or complex. You’ll dive into how to do research to find what stories you can tell depending on your topic as well as how to use your personal experience to convey your points within a narrative structure. You’ll also learn about the story development process including how to storyboard and outline a manuscript.

How You’ll Learn

In this six week class, there will be both asynchronous sessions and live synchronous sessions with in-person and virtual options. You’ll learn how to incorporate storytelling in your presentations and speeches through activities such as storyboarding, story analysis, practicing delivery, and revising your speeches. For your culminating assignment, you’ll create a narrative-driven manuscript with a preparatory outline, deliver your presentation, and receive feedback from your peers and instructor.

  • Identify and select the right stories for the audience and message.
  • Make complex data more clear and understandable through story.
