Course Description

The delivery of a presentation or speech is possibly the most influential factor in determining its impact on an audience. If you’re confident and self-assured, you can more easily engage with your audience and clearly communicate your ideas to them. In this course, you’ll learn how to use non-verbal communication to get your message across as well as how to manage public speaking anxiety to help give clear, effective presentations and speeches.

This course is designed for a wide range of professionals in a multitude of fields including business executives, entrepreneurs, educators and trainers, sales and marketing professionals, healthcare professionals, engineers, researchers, government officials, nonprofit leaders, and anyone seeking to enhance their professional impact through outstanding professional communication. You’re ready for this course if you have a high school diploma or equivalent, are fluent in English or ASL, and you’re confident in writing speeches and presentations since this course is focused on delivery. If you need to hone the content of your presentations, we recommend that you take Mastering Presentation and Speech Writing first. This course is designed to be accessible and inclusive to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

What You’ll Learn

This course will empower you with the skills and techniques needed to deliver messages dynamically, eloquently, and with confidence. As part of this course, you will practice and receive feedback on impromptu, manuscript, and extemporaneous delivery of speeches and presentations. You’ll also learn about the non-verbal elements of a presentation, including body language, tone, and facial expressions as well as how to use them to your advantage while presenting. This course will also touch on techniques that you can use to manage and overcome public speaking anxiety and become more confident during presentations.

How You’ll Learn

This six week course is blended with asynchronous work as well as live synchronous sessions that can take place either online or in person. Throughout the course, you’ll hone your presentation skills with delivery exercises and practice, anxiety management exercises, and peer reviews of your practice presentations. You’ll work on impromptu presentations where you have no time to prepare, scripted presentations with ample warning ahead of time, and extemporaneous presentations where you have a limited amount of time to prepare. You’ll receive feedback from your classmates and instructor about all of these different presentation types so you can feel confident with your presentation abilities regardless of the amount of preparation time you have.
