Course Description

At the core of every presentation is the content you’re presenting, and knowing how to effectively communicate your ideas and information is key to a successful presentation or speech. However, there are many factors that you have to keep in mind while creating a presentation, from considering your audience to using the right rhetorical techniques to convey your points. In this course, you’ll dive into how to create effective speeches and presentation manuscripts and walk away with the knowledge of how to write a strong, content-driven presentation.

This course is designed for a wide range of professionals in a multitude of fields including business executives, entrepreneurs, educators and trainers, sales and marketing professionals, healthcare professionals, engineers, researchers, government officials, nonprofit leaders, and anyone seeking to enhance their professional impact through outstanding professional communication. If you have a high school diploma or equivalent and are fluent in English or ASL, this course can help you hone in on your ability to communicate to your audience during a presentation. This course is designed to be accessible and inclusive to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

What You’ll Learn

In this course, you’ll learn how to refine and improve the content of your presentations. With a focus on the content of your presentation as opposed to the delivery, you’ll learn how to create and organize presentations and speeches that effectively communicate information. This includes refining your content to engage and captivate audiences, make a lasting impact, and motivate action. By the end of the course, you’ll create a manuscript and prepare an outline for a presentation about a topic of your choice.

How You’ll Learn

This eight week course is blended with asynchronous sessions as well as synchronous class time with both in-person and online options. Throughout the course, you’ll learn about crafting presentation content through activities including audience analysis, rhetorical analysis of example speeches and presentations, peer review of your classmates’ speeches and presentations, and revising your final project. You’ll walk away from the course with a polished speech or presentation manuscript that you will have revised and edited with input from your classmates and instructor that you will present live to your class.

  • Perform thorough audience analyses that provide insights into audience needs, expectations, and preferences, and use those insights to tailor messages effectively in order to connect with audiences and build trust.

  • Convey messages appropriately, accurately, clearly, precisely, and concisely, and incorporate stylistic devices to enhance rhythm and vividness.
